Haematology
Overview:
Haematology
Our Haematology department focuses on the study of blood and blood-forming tissues. We conduct a wide range of tests to diagnose and monitor blood disorders, such as anemia, leukemia, and clotting disorders. Our advanced diagnostic capabilities ensure accurate results and effective patient management.
The CBC test is used to evaluate overall health and detect a variety of disorders, including anemia, infections, and many other diseases. It provides essential information about the number and types of cells in the blood.
A bone marrow biopsy is performed using a needle to extract a small sample of bone marrow tissue, usually from the hip bone. The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia and may cause some discomfort.
Coagulation tests measure the blood's ability to form clots. They help diagnose bleeding disorders, assess the risk of excessive bleeding or clotting, and monitor patients on anticoagulant therapy.
A doctor may order a peripheral blood smear to examine the blood cells' morphology, helping diagnose conditions such as leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and other blood disorders that affect the size, shape, and appearance of blood cells.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC is a comprehensive blood test that measures various components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. It helps diagnose conditions like anemia, infections, and many other blood disorders.
Peripheral Blood Smear
A peripheral blood smear involves spreading a drop of blood on a microscope slide and staining it to examine the shape, size, and appearance of blood cells. This test helps diagnose conditions such as leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and other blood disorders.
Coagulation Tests (e.g., PT, aPTT)
Coagulation tests measure the blood's ability to clot. Prothrombin Time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) are common tests that assess the clotting process, helping diagnose bleeding disorders and monitor anticoagulant therapy.
Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
These procedures involve extracting a small sample of bone marrow tissue to examine the blood cell production process. They are crucial for diagnosing leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other hematologic disorders.
